Day 1 – Tuesday: Magic Kingdom

Today was our first full day in Florida and we decided to go to Disney’s Magic Kingdom today.  The Brit’s Guide to Orlando and Walt Disney World book we bought recommended getting to the parks before opening time so we aimed to get there about half an hour before opening.  We arrived at the park about 20 minutes early and chose to get the boat from the carpark to the entrance – there are two options, boat or monorail – but the boat seemed to be a good way of getting a nice view of the Princess Castle appearing across the water for my first ever visit!

Once at the park, we arrived just as the rope drop opening ceremony was finishing and in perfect time to head into the park.  Headed across to Splash Mountain and the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad first and then over to Space Mountain to beat the queues at the main rides we wanted to go on.  However, as it turned out the park was really quiet and we got on all of those a few times with barely any waiting.

I enjoyed the park and the rides but having been to Disneyland Paris before I knew a little about what to expect and I think it would have been more magical the first time.  It was interesting to see how some of the rides compared – the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which I thought would be really popular especially as the new film is due out soon, was a little disappointing.  They had changed some parts of the ride to add a few Captain Jack Sparrow models which looked quite realistic and a clever hologram which appeared on water mist above the boat near the beginning of the ride, but otherwise it was fairly average and not worth a second visit.

Little Green MenI really enjoyed Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin – I am such a kid!  The Jungle Cruise was good fun too and our boat was captained by quite a character.

We left the park about mid afternoon having done everything we wanted to do a few times thanks to the lack of queues and headed back to the villa to float around in our pool for a few hours before dinner.

More of my photographs from Magic Kingdom can be found on my Florida Flickr set.
