Ice Skating at Marwell

Just over a week ago I wrote about Marwell’s Magical Winter.  Last night was the official opening event, and I went along with Matt, a friend from work.

Marwell HallWe were picked up at the entrance by the Snowflake Express train and taken up to Marwell Hall.  On Thursday nights, I am driving the Snowflake Express as one of my volunteer duties, so it was fun to be a passenger for a change!

The entrance to the hall is marked by some fire lanterns, and the house is all lit up looking magical.  The ice rink is set up in front of the house, with a number of food and drinks stalls around the outside.

James Cretney and Chris PackhamSoon after we arrived the official opening ceremony started.  James Cretney, Marwell’s CEO, opened the event and introduced Chris Packham.  Chris is an environmentalist, and television presenter, who grew up locally in Southampton.  Chris talked a little about growing up in Southampton and visiting Marwell and other animal centres in the local area.  He then cut the ribbon and declared Marwell’s Magical Winter officially open.  He even gave us a quick pretend pirouette on the ice.

After the opening, a number of ice dancers came on to perform some routines.  Of course, being Marwell Zoo, they had some dressed as animals!  They also had some girls dressed in Santa outfits which brightened the ice with their sparkly costumes.

A little while later, after the professionals had left, and we’d had some food to get up some energy, Matt and I decided to have a go at skating.  I’d had a go earlier in the week at the staff and volunteers evening and it had been loads of fun, so it was good to have another go.  We picked a quieter session so had plenty of room to have a skate and also a bit of a laugh.

So this last one is a photo of you? I must have seen one before but you look so young. I didn’t realize I have been talking with someone so young all this time. I am going to return the favor u have done me a few times and tell you there is a misspelled word in this post! But at least the photos aren’t crooked like mine sometimes are. And I love the expression “have a go”. We should start using it over here. Maybe I will have a go at introducing it in my blog. Have a great Sunday 🙂

Where is the misspelled word? Are you sure it’s not just in English instead of American?
